What does North Devon UNESCO Biosphere mean to you?
Throughout July and August 2025 we held a photo competition to find out what North Devon UNESCO Biosphere means to the people that live and work in the Biosphere region.
North Devon UNESCO Biosphere encompasses a large area – extending from the catchments of the Rivers Taw and Torridge, with its core at Braunton Burrows sand dune system – and all the people and life in between!
We encouraged entrants to take a picture of anything, with any type of camera: the view from your window, your favourite walk, your commute, your local community, some of the spectacular species of plants or animals we share this space with – whatever connects you with the Biosphere.

The entries were incredible and accompanied by varied and meaningful descriptions highlighting people’s connection with nature. The photos were judged by a panel of local judges: Rob Jordan (North Devon Biosphere Enterprises), Dr Natalie Whitehead (Exeter Science Centre), Jo Pullin and Bridie Kennerley (Wild About Devon).
Categories were not set in advance but clear themes emerged through the judging process. Winning entries in each category were selected and exhibited in Barnstaple Library from 20th October to 7th November 2025. The winning entries in each category are shown below but the full collection of wonderful entries can be seen on the North Devon Biosphere website. Thank you to everyone that entered!
